Key west flats fishing report 4/15/13

I had an epic day of hooking tarpon with Bob/Kurt, the only problem is we jumped 10-15 fish and did not get any to the boat. We lost fish in every possible manor, broken line, frayed leader, no bowing and a bent hook. We caught a nice hatch the lasted until 9;30 with the tarpon just flowing through.

Fished with Andy and Melany Smith today. We started at 6:30 and were in the tarpon at the first flat, Andy jumped 6 tarpon on Hogey lures before Melanie broke the skunk with a nice 40 pounder. The 7th tarpon on a lure came tight and finally Andy landed his first Key west tarpon, this fish was also 40+ pounds and after a few jumps and 10 minutes we had this fish boat side . We headed to the flats for some barracuda fishing and Melanie almost landed the first fish. Andy had a few refusals before he landed a very nice barracuda and the 4hr trip ended.

Key west flats fishing report 3/29-3/30 2013

After the worst cold front of the year I finally got a chance to go fishing, my first trip was with Patti and Tina. The day started very slow but as the incoming tide came in the fishing started to heat up. We landed a few barracudas before we has shot at both bonefish and sharks. We did not land either fish but we did have a great day catching cudas. My trip today was with Mark and Kale, just like the day before it started slow but started to heat up with the incoming tide. Both Mark/Kale hooked several cudas before we landed a nice bonefish. We had 2 shots at sharks before the day ended.

Key west flats fishing report 2/10 2/11 2013

The past 2 days were complete opposites. the first day I fished with Theresa Corley and Victoria, We started tarpon fishing and found a lot but could not get a bite. We then went flats fishing and had shots all day, we landed several large jacks and unfortunately missed some wonderful shot at permit. Today I fished with Al Mcaughlin, we barely saw any tarpon but landed a 40-60 pounder. The flats were not working and we landed a few small jacks and lady fish.

Key west flats fishing report 1/30/13

Matt C had another great day on the flats. We started looking for tarpon, we jumped 1 and had another bite. I then ran into a huge school of feeding jacks, we had a few on and landed one. Permit fishing was next on the agenda, it was a day of quality over quantity, Matt landed this huge permit and had only 1 other shot before the day ended,

Key west fishing report 12/28/12

I had a double half today, my first trip was with Craig and Jessica. We started with tarpon and had no luck, next we fished some of the backcountry channels. The channels were slow with a few pompanos and lady fish caught. The first flat was also slow but our second was on fire. We caught a few really nice jacks and a lemon shark.

My next trip was with good friend Chris Lee and his father. We hit the channels witch were better than the morning but still not really going on. We caught plenty of fish and a very nice black tip shark.

Key west flats fishing report 12/17/12

Today I had a the pleasure of fishing with Peter and James Evans from Bromley UK. We started fishing in the backcountry and instantly started hooking ladyfish and jacks. I butterflied one of the lady fish and cast it down tide for black tips sharks, it was not long before James was hooked up to a nice shark. James landed his first black tip about 10 minutes later. We continued catching plenty fish when the sharks rod started to scream, Peter was up next and after about 15 minutes he landed a huge sting ray. We started polling the flats and James missed his first shark but then hooked up on a 6ft lemon that we landed after an epic 20 minute battle.

Key west fishing report by AWS charters

I had the pleasure of fishing with long time client and friend Matt “the fishing mortician” Calcaterra. We started the first day looking for tarpon and permit first and if things went to plan to move to the east and catch the bonefish for the slam. We started strong with Matt hooking his first permit he saw, we landed this fish after a 10 minute fight. The tarpon caused the problems, Matt made several very nice shots only to have the tarpon refuse the crab. The most devastating refusal came when a tarpon rushed the crab opened his mouth only to refuse, and to make matters worst circled the crab numerous times before easing off. I hit the flat again and not only did we not catch the tarpon but the tide for bonefish past and we only got 1 shot.

Day 2

I went looking for baby tarpon first but had no luck. I then went looking for bonefish and had a few shot but did not hook up. No luck on 2/3 of the slam but the permit would save the day. We missed our first shot but matts second was perfect and he landed an impressive 20+ pounder. We then found a few schools of small permit where Matt landed 2 before we left the flat. I hit another flat and we got a few shots 1 of witch was absolutely massive.

Day 3

We found a fair amount of tarpon feeding on bait but our tarpon woes continued. Matt made several very nice shots but once again we were not rewarded with a grab. I then went looking for permit and had plenty of shots but a little bit of unlock we ended up empty handed. We did get into a massive school of bar jacks, Matt landed a very nice 1 before they raced off the flat.
