Key west flats fishing report 3/12/14

It was another beautiful day as I departed Key west harbor. My clients were Bill and Jim from Wisconsin. We were in search of tarpon so we headed to a spot that usually hold fish on an incoming tide. I had to move a few times but Bill hooked and landed his first tarpon.

We decide to switch gears and head to the flats in search of Barracudas and permit. Our first spot had a pair of tailing permit but we could not get the crab in the right place. Our second flat both Jim and Bill hooked nice cudas and had shots at permit.

Key west flats fishing report 2/10/14

Today i had the pleasure of fishing with 2 of my favorites client, Bill and Terry. We went out today in search of bonefish and permit. I headed to a flat east of Key west that has been good for bonefish. I spotted my first school of bonefish after about 15 minutes. Bill did not hook up on the first few schools but once I changed from a crab to a jig, he hooked up right away. We finished this flat and went in search of permit. I only found 1 before we headed home.

Key west flats fishing report 12/8/13

Day 2 of fishing with Brian arrived with high winds and perfect skies. The first day we ran into a huge school of busting jacks, Brian broke in my new very light weight St croix spin rod on a healthy Jack. We headed out west in search of permit but the skies clouded up and we headed home. Today the fishing was slow with a handful of permit and barracudas, we did end up landing a trophy permit the 1 fish Brian was in search of.

Key west flats fishing report 11/26/13

On a blustery day in Key west I took Jim Cassidy out flats fishing. We were delayed by a huge rain storm so our start time was around 9:30. I caught the very end of the falling tide a few miles west of Key west, sharks, permit and barracudas were the species of choice. We spooked a few permit before Jim made a perfect cast at a tailing fish that crushed the crab before it swam down to the bottom. Jim fought the fish for about 10 minutes before we landed it for the picture. We hooked a cuda about 5 minutes later after it smoked a tube lure, Jim fought through a few insane runs and jumps before we landed this fish for the picture. I made a big move to the east to find better lighting. We missed a few shots at permit before we spotted numerous sharks laying face into the tide. We made our first cast and the sharks quickly caught the scent of the bait, after a few seconds we had a fish on that we landed after a 10-15 minute fight. The clouds started gathering and we headed home after landing all the species we were looking for

Second day with the Amy’s and we were looking to do some sight fishing for permit, sharks and barracudas. I started off teaching them how to cast accurately and work the cuda lure correctly before I started polling the flat. We had 2 shots at cudas while practicing and then 2 shots at tailing permit before the clouds came over and ruled out sight fishing. We hooked and lost 2 sharks close to the boat before we headed out cuda fishing again. I started blind casting a bank west of Key west and had our first swipe after just a few casts, just a bit further down the bank we had a grab that after a great fight we landed for the picture.

Key west flats fishing report 11/20/13

Perfect temperature and flat calm winds greeted myself and my clients today. Amy squared “Rosenfeld and stoke” were my clients today, 7am was our departure time and tarpon/sharks were our target. We started tarpon fishing north of Key west and the tarpon were happily rolling up and down the channel. I anchored up tide of the fish and put 2 pinfish out on both side of the boat, I started to chum with some some pinfish and we had a double hook up with feisty 60+pounders. Amy Stoke had a few jumps from her tarpon before he jumped off. The other fish dragged us about a mile and through some huge weed beds before we finally had him boat side for the picture.

With the tarpon caught we headed out shark fishing. I started out using some live bait and hooked up pretty quickly, this lemon shark ran about 50 yards before the line broke. We then landed 2 for 2 before we headed home.

Key west flats fishing report 11/18/13

Another beautiful day here in Key west, blue skies and low wind. I fished with Rob and Christy from Colorado and we headed out west of Key west in search of barracudas, sharks and permit. The first 2 spots were pretty empty with a few wandering sharks and a surprise mudding school of bonefish.

My 3rd spot had much more life and we had shots at both permit and cudas, Rob hooked up first and landed a very nice barracuda. Christy had never fished before so after a short lesson she was ready to go, she missed her first 3 but landed the 4th which was a very respectable 10 pounder.

Time was running out and Rob expressed an interest in catching a shark so we headed to a spot on our way back to Key west. We caught some live bait and were hooked up almost instantly but we pulled the hook, this happened 2 more times before Rob landed his first lemon shark, it was a 6+footer.

Key west flats fishing report 11/17/13

Today I went fishing with Micheal Drayer. We left Key west around 9am on a sunny but slightly windy day, I caught the top of the tide west of Key west in search of sharks, barracuda and permit. I stopped after a 15 minute boat ride and we spotted our first permit while I was giving my instructions and we did not get a shot off. We had several shots at both permit and sharks before Micheal hooked and landed his first and only lemon shark. The shark was around 5ft and around 60 pounds, good job Micheal. We started blind casting for barracudas and found quite a few cudas as well as a few permit when the sun did come out. We had a few grabs on the barracuda lures but did not keep one on, however we did hook a huge bull shark that broke off after a powerful run.

key west flats fishing report 9/17/13

Mike and Elizabeth from New orleans came to Key west to enjoy the scenery and possibly catch a tarpon. This is not the best of times to land the silver king but we headed out with a bait well full of pinfish. I had been finding a few schools in a channel close to Key west and they were there once again. We got up tide of them and drifted a pin fish down to them, we ended up jumping 4 and landing 3. I then went out looking for barracuda and permit, we found plenty of both. We landed a nice permit but missed out on the barracudas.

Shark fishing has been the most reliable these past few days. My first trip of the day was with Peter/parker, this farther son team landed 3 huge lemon sharks and a nice bonnet head shark. We also had a few shots at permit and spooked a school of bonefish. My second trip was with Dan/Allyson, they also landed some very nice lemon sharks and broke off a permit before we headed back to Key west.
