Key west flats slam with Phil Jones
May is 1 of my favorites months of the year because I get a chance to fish with many of my long time clients. Today I fished with Phil Jones from Canada and the weather was fantastic, clear skies and no wind. We headed out of Key west in search of tarpon. We found a guppy hatch and the tarpon were eating everything. Phil jumped 2 fish on soft plastics and landed a 50 pounder on a crab.
After the tarpon we went in search of tailing permit, I took Phil to a flat that the permit tail heavily on the beginning of the incoming tide. The first school we encountered went to deep and we could not wade to them. We saw some tailing fish and jumped out of the boat to wade after them. Phil made a perfect cast at a group of 3 fish and we were hooked up right away. The permit put up a hell of a fight before we landed it and set it free.
We were 2/3rds of the way there before 8am in the morning so we made the decision to go for the slam. I headed east of Key west in search of bonefish. The first sand flat was loaded with bonefish and we landed 2 before the clouds came over and we had to switch to tarpon fishing. We had many shot but we did not land any.
