Key west flats fishing report 3/21/13

It is always a pleasure to fish with truly gifted fisherman and today I had that chance. I started at 7am with Jeff and his son Elijah from Boston looking for tarpon. We were blind casting for rolling tarpon but the north wind really gave them lock jaw so we went looking for jacks and permit, our first flat we spooked just 1 permit and nothing else. Second 1 was also devoid of life but we found schools of jacks feeding on ballyhoos. These jacks were moving extremely fast and we had a few grabs but we never came tight on the fly. We finally hooked a nice jack that was following a lemon shark and Elijah experienced his first fish to take him into the backing, he landed him after a 5 minute fight. Jeff landed his jack following a sting ray, we ended up landing 2 more before we headed in.
